چکیده

We describe the operation of a laser cooled cesium fountain clock in the quantum limited regime. An ultrastable cryogenic sapphire oscillator is used to measure the short-term frequency stability of the fountain as a function of the number of detected atoms Nat. For Nat varying from 4 3 104 to 6 3 105 the Allan standard deviation of the frequency fluctuations is in excellent agreement with the N 21y2 at law of atomic projection noise. With 6 3 105 atoms, the relative frequency stability is 4 3 10214t21y2, where t is the integration time in seconds. This is the best short-term stability ever reported for primary frequency standards, a factor of 5 improvement over previous results. [S0031-9007(99)09299-6]

Reaching the quantum limit in a fountain clock using a microwave oscillator phase locked to an ultrastable laser

A cesium fountain clock is operated utilizing a microwave oscillator that derives its frequency stability from a stable laser by means of a fiber-laser femtosecond frequency comb. This oscillator is based on the technology developed for optical clocks and replaces the quartz-based microwave oscillator commonly used in fountain clocks. As a result, a significant decrease in the frequency instabi...

Cesium Atomic Fountain Clocks at Nmij

We describe the recent progress in our cesium atomic fountains at National Metrology Institute of Japan (NMIJ). We have developed three atomic fountains: NMIJ-F1, NMIJ-F2, and a truncated atomic beam fountain. NMIJ-F1 has been the primary frequency standard with uncertainty of 4×10 -15 since 2004. Especially in the last 4 years, we have reported the data to Bureau International des Poids et Mes...

Second Generation Cesium Fountain Primary Frequency Standards at NIST

NIST is currently investigating the design of a second-generation cesium-fountain primary frequency standard. The design goals of this standard include an ultimate frequency inaccuracy of δf/f < 10 and achievable stability better than σy(τ) < 10/τ. This standard is expected to eventually replace NIST-F1, the current U.S. primary frequency standard [1]. In the context of reaching frequency uncer...

Evaluation of long term performance of continuously running atomic fountains

An ensemble of rubidium atomic fountain clocks has been put into operation at the US Naval Observatory (USNO). These fountains are used as continuous clocks in the manner of commercial caesium beams and hydrogen masers for the purpose of improved timing applications. Four fountains have been in operation for more than two years and are included in the ensemble used to generate the USNO master c...

Initial atomic coherences and Ramsey frequency pulling in fountain clocks

In the uncertainty budget of primary atomic cesium fountain clocks, evaluations of frequency-pulling shifts of the hyperfine clock transition caused by unintentional excitation of its nearby transitions (Rabi and Ramsey pulling) have been based so far on an approach developed for cesium beam clocks. We re-evaluate this type of frequency pulling in fountain clocks and pay particular attention to...
